Lower Wick Swimming Pool 50th Anniversary Celebration

15 September 2024

Lower Wick Swimming Pool, Weir Lane, Lower Wick, Worcester  WR2 4AY

Today, Lower Wick pool offers lessons, public swim sessions, and runs classes in its fitness studio. It opened in 1974, following a mammoth fundraising effort lasting more than ten years.

It all began in 1962 when the Worcester Citizens Swimming Bath Association was set up as a not-for-profit, charitable organisation, with the aim of building an indoor pool in the city. Following a long period of fundraising through donations and statutory grants, early plans were drawn up to the build the new the pool at Cripplegate Park in St Johns. Once it was discovered the site was unsuitable, the present location at the end of Weir Lane was leased to the association, and building work could begin.

The pool was originally called the Worcester Citizens’ Swimming Pool and was heated by methane gas from the nearby sewage works, allowing for some very warm water temperatures! Over the years, many improvements to the facilities were made, including the building of a gym and a health hydro, which have since been replaced by the new fitness studio.

Its estimated that more than a hundred thousand children have learnt to swim at the pool over the years. Today the pool is visited by 18 schools for swimming lessons during term time. As well as providing children’s lessons six days a week, there are learn to swim crash courses over the summer. There is lifeguarding training accredited by the National Lifesaving Academy, public swim sessions, while the fitness studio hosts Zumba, yoga and pilates classes. There are aqua aerobics sessions and the pool can be hired for parties, including the use of a giant inflatable.

The celebration event is due to take place on Sunday 15th September at the pool. There will be activities for all ages, stalls to browse, and other entertainment, for more details nearer the time, look at the pool’s social media feeds or get in touch with them (details below).
