Ledbury Carers' Group
Orchard Lane, Ledbury, HR8 1BY
Monthly meetings on the first Tuesday, 1.30-3.30pm) at Leadon Bank, HR8 1BY
Ledbury Carers’ Group is open to anyone who is a carer - anyone supporting/caring for another person who needs help with day to day living. Usually, but not exclusively, a partner or relative. The group is part of a co-ordinated network of groups across the county, linked together and supported by Hereford Carers’ Support (HCS). Sadly HCS failed to win financial support from Hereford Council (ceased March 31st 2019), and their support for Carers’ groups is now time limited to March 31st 2020. HCS will use bespoke residual funds to offer carer training, days out etc.
Against this backdrop, it is proposed that Ledbury Carers will become self sustaining, building upon the excellent connections and friendships that they have made in the 6-8 years of their existence.
The group meets monthly (first Tuesday, 1.30-3.30pm) at Leadon Bank. All are welcome. Stories and experiences are shared on an informal basis, facilitating access to statutory and voluntary services, knowledge regarding availability of benefits, mobility aids, transport, respite, care homes and so on.
On a regular basis, Hazel, the excellent group co-ordinator, invites speakers from relevant disciplines. Recently these have included St Michael’s Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Society, Herefordshire MIND, Admiral Nurses and Laughter Yoga. The talks are always informative, raising awareness and imparting hitherto unknown information.
The shared camaradie, information sharing and mutual support has proved invaluable to all carers. Knowing that they are not alone, having a colleague to call upon at a time when their inner strength is being challenged. Not infrequently it takes a significant amount of time for an individual to recognise their caring role. Ledbury carers hopes to raise the profile of carers and reach out to all carers through the network that they have established, growing and strengthening the group.
