The play tells the story of a struggling village drama group that hopes to solve its problems with an ambitious piece of casting. Fading Hollywood star Jefferson Steel accepts what looks like the casting offer of a lifetime. What could go wrong? A Bunch of Amateurs started life as a novel and was adapted for the big screen in 2008 by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman. They honed their satirical skills at university before successful writing careers alongside Ian’s role as editor of Private Eye.

Convinced that A Bunch of Amateurs would play well on stage, in 2014 they revised the script as a stage play. It received critical acclaim and has frequently been revived both professionally and by amateur drama groups, where it has been described as "a love letter to the world of amateur drama".
